With the intention to go carbon neutral, John and Janice opted for a Smile5 Solar Battery system to compliment their Solar Panels.
The couple installed a solar hot water system over 20 years ago shortly after moving into their family home in Glenfield. While heading in the right direction, the couple has decided to take advantage of the renewable energy world by opting for a Smile5 Inverter and Battery fueled by 15 solar panels. With their children all grown up and living out of home, John and Janice are overly pleased with the battery capacity that their Smile5 provides. By 11 a.m., the Smile5 battery is fully charged, which caters to their afternoon routine; such as cooking, having the TV on, and more.
Since having a Leaf vehicle, John and Janice are able to charge their car directly from their solar panels or they're backed up battery system. In the situation where the couple is not home and their battery is fully charged, their power is exported to the Grid, which means they’re not wasting power, but they’re making some money from unused energy.
John and Janice decided to dive deeper into the world of renewable energy for two main reasons:
1.They're interested in solar power technology
2.Sustain NZ natural environment
Once the system was installed and handed over to John and Janice, they were given access to their secured AlphaESS app and desktop login. The platform allows them to monitor when, where, and how their battery is distributing power and much more.
With John being a Horticulture teacher, he’s passionate about keeping New Zealand clean and green, while taking advantage of what his own garden can grow. His backyard harvest contains various fruits, vegetables, and nuts. He grows kiwifruit, guavas, cauliflower, macadamia nuts, and more. Once ready to pick, the two distribute the organic fruit to friends, family, and the wider community.
